Leadership in business and public service
Service to others and leadership by example are characteristics Miller has consistently demonstrated throughout his professional and personal life. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Miller began his career in private family business, also serving for years on the Snow Hill Town Board and for one term as a Greene County commissioner.
Miller went on to make his mark in North Carolina’s fire service as a deputy fire chief and instructor, then to the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association in 1990. (NCSFA). He became executive director, a role he held for 23 years before retiring, and is now NCSFA Executive Director Emeritus.
Under his leadership, the NCSFA worked to strengthen benefits for firefighters. These efforts have served as a model for health benefit offerings for firefighters across the country. Miller also built one of the largest state firefighters’ conferences in the United States.
Credit union commitment
Miller’s credit union journey began in 1999, serving on LGFCU’s Eastern Carolina Advisory Council. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2000 and has served as Board Chair and Chair of the Compensation Committee. He has played a key role in the development of Civic Federal Credit Union.
“The credit union is just like those folks I love in the fire service,” he says. “It’s an organization that serves the underserved. It serves the people who really need to be served. And it works to improve the lives of the members.”
Future focus
Miller believes that the credit union’s future should go beyond financial services, to address food insecurity, broadband access for rural North Carolina counties, and financial literacy.
“Through our credit union and our nonprofit, Civic Foundation,” he says, “we should be prepared to address the issues affecting our community members.”
