IRS Free File
IRS.gov has several do-it-yourself options to file your federal, and in most cases, state tax returns. These options differ based on your income and other qualifications. Visit IRS Free File to choose from several software providers for a program that meets your needs.
If you're comfortable doing your own taxes, and meet the Free File qualifications, the IRS offers “Free File Fillable Forms” for federal returns only. These forms are typically available from late January to mid-October each year. For more information, visit IRS Fillable Forms.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program
The VITA program offers free tax preparation help to people within certain income ranges, persons with disabilities and taxpayers who speak limited English and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. To find a VITA site near you, use the locator tool or call 800.906.9887.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program
The TCE program also offers free tax help for taxpayers, particularly those who are age 60 and older. This program provides specialized help with questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with nonprofit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.
To find a TCE site near you, use the locator tool or call 800.906.9887. The AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide program operates most TCE sites and also offers a TCE site locator, which is available during the tax filing season, typically late January to April 15.
